About Mocha VNC
Mocha VNC is an application for the Palm Computing (R) Platform.
It enables you to have full, secure access to your work computer through an
Internet or network connection. Using your Palm device, you can connect to
your Linux/Mac or Windows computer and see the files, programs, and resources exactly as
you would if you were sitting at your desk, just on a smaller screen.
Functionality
- VNC Protocol with encoding types : Raw,CopyRect,Hextile,ZRLE and Zlib
- SSH2 tunnel encryption option.
- Render the a page to a full screen, and offer 2 different
views (compressing) of the large screen on the smaller Palm screen.
- Easy scroll mode with the pen.
- Many trim parameters.
- Free upgrades to new versions of the product.
- Low cost : Single User license 20 USD or 200 USD for a Company License.
Limitations
- Only Palm devices using OS 5 (high density) or better are supported.
- No sound or clipboard support
- The VNC protocol requires some band width. We recommend using a Wireless
LAN solution. Using a slow GSM/GRPS phone cannot be recommended
Menu system and Quick buttons
The 4 Quick Buttons on a palm are used to make it easier to navigate the screen in Mocha VNC.
Zoom: Toggle if the full VNC Server screen is displayed or only part of it
Scroll: if in zoom mode, this function toggle if a pen movement on the screen will scroll
the screen , or it will be a mouse movement
Keys: Gives a pop up menu, with a list of the most common PC keys
Right click: If pressed next tap on the screen will be a right click mouse action.
From menu - quick buttons, it is possible to change this default layout.
In the following we will describe the menu elements
in details.
Menu - Connect to VNC Server
Use this command (or press Start in the first screen) to start a new session with your VNC Server
- VNC Server IP Address: IP Address for the VNC Server. Either a DNS name or a raw IP address, such as 192.168.1.1
- Port: The VNC server can listen on any port. The default ports are 5900 for Mac/Windows and Linux/UNIX uses 5901
- VNC Password: Password on the VNC Server. Notice this is not a secure option. It is better to give
the password in the secure sign on screen displayed, when the session to the server has been established
- Auto connect. Start a session to the VNC Server, when the VNC program is loaded.
- Auto reconnect. If the server close a session, the session will be started again
- If a SSH2 server is installed on the network, it is possible to create a secure SSH2 tunnel between the
Palm device and the SSH2 server. The SSH2 server could run on the VNC server, but it is not required. Notice, using
SSH2 will increase the band width needed.
Menu - Disconnect
Close a session with the VNC Server
Menu - Quick Buttons
Assign other functions for the 4 quick buttons on the device
Menu - Preferences
Old Tungsten devices have limited dynamic memory. Mocha VNC will check the memory size on program start, and if it is low, display a warning, telling the program must use another type of memory, which will give a slower performance.
A hint:menu -about dialog display the current free heap size, which is the same
as the dynamic memory.
If no pen input on the palm for some time, will force the Palm to power off, and a session
will be lost. As default Mocha VNC will disable the power off function when a session exist.
Menu - Host List
Use this dialog to configure a set of VNC Server IP names. Notice it is possible to add a port
number to the IP address. Example:
192.168.2.2:5901
When tapping 'Host list' in the connect dialog, a pop up menu will be displayed and
a host name can be selected.
Menu - license
After ordering Mocha VNC from MochaSoft, a license key will be received.
Enter the key together with the License Name given on the Order.
As there is link between the license name and license key it is important to enter both very careful.
If the program reports "Wrong type of License key" , please check:
- You are using product Mocha VNC for Palm OS.
- The License name and License key must be typed as given in the
license letter.
Still problems, please contact Mochasoft and if possible include :

A company license can be used by a single company. If there are branch

Set Up Your Server or Workstation for VNC access
A VNC software package must be installed on the server, to allow Mocha VNC
access to the server.
See www.realvnc.com for details.
Other servers exists, such as TightVNC, but not all supports the ZRLE encoding technology,
which is preferred for low band width situations.
If the UNIX/Linux version of realvnc is used, it is possible to select
the size of the server screen with parameter -geometry.
-geometry 800x600
gives a useful screen and requires limited band width.
